Numerous different materials, all with different mechanical and thermal properties In particular, the winding copper and insulation components are subject to severe mechanical and thermal stresses as individual components of the rotor undergo thermal differential expansion under a wide variety of demanding operating conditions .

If these components are not designed appropriately to interact as a “unit”, or are not suitable for the operating regime of the power plant, e.g. for machines operated in frequent start-stop mode, then the resulting wear can lead to operating faults: short-circuited coils, thermal unbalances, increased vibration, and unplanned downtime
